How much space do I need? - Size and placement

As interpreters usually work in pairs, we always rent double booths. The space required for one booth is About 1.65m x 1.65m plus about 90-100cm clearance to open the door on the side. The door can be mounted as required to suit the spatial situation.

If another cabin is required, for example by another language, the cabins can be placed directly next to each other.

Interpreter booths are seldom placed free-standing in a room. As a rule, they are located at the periphery of the event room, i.e. on the side or at the end. When positioning them, it is essential to ensure that the interpreters have a good and clear view of the speakers! Not only do they have to hear the words, they also read facial expressions and body language. If the direct view is not good, they need a video image, for example on a monitor in front of their booth.

If more than two booths are needed, the space requirement increases in depth because the interpreters' access to their workstations has to be considered. They can then only reach their place from the rear. In this case you have to take into account about 120 - 150 cm behind the booths.

An example would be the European Works Council meeting of a large corporation. There can be about 20 languages to be translated with a corresponding number of booths easily.

The interpreter console

The console is the central tool used by the interpreters to feed their translations into the system. It must be easy and intuitively operable so that full concentration is reserved for the translation work. It must be possible to trigger all important functions immediately at the push of a button. The volume and sound must be adjustable individually by each user during operation. Our proven SIS 1202 standard console meets all these requirements. It is "...  designed for two interpreters who work in alternating sessions. A headset or a microphone and headphones can be connected to the console for each interpreter. The headphone signal can be switched between the original language and a pre-selected relay language...".

What is a relay language?

The relay language is the translation of the original language of an interpreter which is used by another interpreter who cannot translate from the current original language. (This is quite common in larger conferences.)
